Title: Training the farmers in the UK

In March 2005, Agroplan organised and delivered 5 one day workshops on farm diversification, across the region to pilot Agroplan training materials in this area and in part were supported by the DEFRA farm advisory service in the UK.

The training was based around a farm visit and a training manual, which had been designed to provide the farmers who attended with the tools and skills to start them along the road of developing a business plan but, more importantly, to understand the requirement for planning when undertaking change on the farm. Sixty people participated in the events. The techniques used in the Workshops were highly participative with much open questioning and challenging pre-held conceptions about life outside the farm. Exercises included individual book-work and group brain storming. The exercises included a SWOT analysis and an introduction to risk analysis all developed through the Agroplan programme and available within the Agroplan manual “Farm management entrepreneurship and management”

The responses from the participants on the feedback sheets, reviewing and evaluating the event, provide an assessment of the workshops and valuable information for future events. The events, in the main, were well received and most of the participants had good intentions to focus on the workbook provided after the event and to develop more structured plans for the future of their business
